Alberta RCMP and Law Enforcement Partners launch Operation Cold Start
With temperatures dropping and snow arriving, Alberta RCMP will once again work with law enforcement partners across the province on Operation Cold Start. Operation Cold Start is designed to reduce the theft of vehicles with engines running during the winter months, with the help of the public.
Warming up your vehicle before your trip may seem convenient, but it can quickly become a serious problem if your vehicle is stolen. Vehicle crimes are often the result of opportunistic actions. “The goal of Operation Cold Start is to reduce crime by making Albertans aware of the steps they can take to keep their property safe” explains Corporal Mike Fulton of the Alberta RCMP Community Safety and Wellness Branch.
Vehicle theft is not just about the vehicle owner; the impact is felt throughout the community. Thefts drive up insurance costs across the province, and stolen vehicles can be used in other crimes or even put back on the market and sold to unsuspecting Albertans.
From January 9, 2024, to January 12, 2024, law enforcement agencies across the province will perform a variety of tasks to help keep vehicles safe. They will keep an eye on unattended vehicles with the engine running to see if they are properly secured and if the keys are in the passenger compartment. Police officers will also take part in outreach efforts to show the public how to keep their property safe.
Here are some vehicle safety tips from the Alberta RCMP:
- If you are unable to park in a driveway or garage, choose a well-lit area;
- Visible anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks can reduce the risk of vehicle theft and vehicle break-ins;
- If possible, consider getting a remote starter to warm up your vehicle;
- Never leave your vehicle unattended when the keys are in the passenger compartment;
- Always lock the doors even if you are parked in a driveway or garage;
- Never leave valuable objects such as a wallet, bag, or money in sight in an unattended vehicle;
- Most modern engines do not need a warm-up period – if your vehicle needs a warm-up period, avoid leaving it unattended.
