Summer Renovations/Additions Permit Reminder

The Town of Vegreville is offering a few friendly reminders when it comes to summer property additions and renovations.

Residents are reminded that if they plan to make any additions or renovations to their property to keep the following in mind:

Swimming Pools, Hot Tubs, and Inflatable Pools

  • A development permit and building permit is required for in-ground structures.
  • A building permit is required for hot tubs and they must have a lockable lid or be inside a fenced yard
  • All pools (above ground, inground and inflatable) must be in a fenced yard and must be a 6 ft fence.
  • All must be in a rear yard (not located in a front yard)
  • Pools over 2 ft deep and hot tubs require Development permits

Decks

  • Uncovered and open decks have different setback requirements than covered and screened decks.
  • Uncovered and open decks in Residential Districts shall have a minimum rear setback of 2.7m (9.0 ft) from any rear property line, and a minimum side yard setback of 1.2m (4 ft) from any side yard property lines.
  • Covered decks and decks screened by netting or mesh, including patios and verandas, may project a maximum of 1.5m (5 ft) into the minimum required front or rear yards, but shall not be enclosed nor extend into required side yards of the principal building.
  • Any deck over 107 sq ft requires a development permit and any deck over 2 ft in height requires both a development permit and a building permit and must have a railing no matter the size.

Sheds and Garages

  • Any building over 107 sq ft must have a development permit and building permit
  • The lot must have a house existing on-site or currently being built to allow a shed and/or garage
  • Cannot have sheds and detached garages that collectively exceed the footprint of the house. Or 12% of the lot size
  • Must be placed a minimum of 5 ft from the house
  • Must be a minimum of 3.3 ft from a property line or 20 ft from an overhead door to a property line and the eaves cannot be closer than 1 ft from the property line

Fence

  • All fences require a development permit.
  • The max height in residential is 6 ft in rear and side yards and 3.3 ft in front yards.   
  • Non-resident fence height max is 9 ft inside and rear yards and no higher than 6 ft in front yards
