Don Mazankowski Statue Finds New Home
Vegreville, AB (August 14, 2026) –A familiar piece of Vegreville history has found a fitting new home.
The Town of Vegreville is pleased to announce that the statue honouring the late Right Honourable Don Mazankowski, which was previously displayed at the Vegreville Museum, has been relocated to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton.
Following the closure of the Vegreville Museum in 2024, the Town began considering an appropriate future home for the statue — one that would preserve its connection to Mazankowski's remarkable legacy while ensuring it could continue to be seen and appreciated by the public.
The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute provides exactly that.
For 25 years, Mazankowski represented the Vegreville riding in the House of Commons, winning seven federal elections between 1968 and his retirement from politics in 1993. During his distinguished career, he held several senior cabinet positions and served as Canada's Deputy Prime Minister from 1986 to 1993.
The bronze statue, sculpted by British Columbia artist Denis Kleine and commissioned by Vegreville-area residents, depicts Mazankowski delivering a speech. Its dedication recognizes his 25 years of service to his constituency, party and country, as well as the humility and friendliness for which he was known.
In a letter to the Town, representatives of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute expressed their gratitude for the statue and said it will serve as a daily reminder to patients, families, staff, physicians and visitors of the legacy of compassion, innovation and dedication Mazankowski inspired.
