Fire Pit Requirements
A fire pit must meet the following specifications:
- Clearance: Maintain 3 meters (10’) from buildings, property lines, and anything else that can catch fire;
- Base: The fire pit is set upon or built into the bare ground or on a non-combustible material such as brick, stone or concrete;
- Construction: The fire pit installation has enclosed sides made from bricks, concrete blocks, heavy gauge metal, or other non-combustible materials acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ);
- Spark Screen (Fire Pit Opening): A mesh screen with openings no larger than 1.25 cm (1/2 inch) made of expanded metal (or equivalent) must cover the opening; and
- Location: The fire pit is located away from any underground utilities and a minimum 1 metre (3’) laterally and 5 metre (15’) vertically from any above-ground wires. Cannot be located in the front yard of a residence.
Fire Pit Permits
Do I need a permit?
Yes. A permit is required for all fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, and stationary barbeques. Find additional information in the Fire Services Bylaw.
If I purchased a home with an existing fire pit, do I need a permit?
Yes. Fire pit permits are not transferable. New owners must obtain their own permit.
Approved Burning Materials
Only clean fuel may be burned, such as:

clean, dry and seasoned wood material;
wood material which does not contain wood preservatives;
standard charcoal products; and/or
synthetic or manufactured logs designed for burning.
Burning refuse or waste materials is not permitted.
Permit Fees

A one-time fee of $28.75 applies to cover inspection of the fire pit’s construction and/or location.
Penalties
Failure to comply with the Fire Services Bylaw may result in:

A fine of $100 to $500, and
-
Additional costs if Fire Department response is required.

Once payment is received, your application will be reviewed and forwarded to the Vegreville Fire Department, who will contact you to complete the process.
