Traffic Safety Act Fine Increases – Effective March 13, 2026
The Government of Alberta has announced increases to traffic fines under the Traffic Safety Act, effective March 13, 2026.
These provincial changes apply across Alberta. Fine amounts are set by the Government of Alberta and enforced locally by Municipal Enforcement and the RCMP. Under the new schedule, fines for many common traffic offences will increase by approximately 30%, while fines for high-risk driving offences will increase by 50%.
Examples of 30% Fine Increases:
- Distracted driving: $300 → $390
- Unsafe left turn: $162 → $211
- Non-compliant window glazing/tinted windows: $81 → $105
Examples of 50% Fine Increases (High-Risk Driving):
- Excessive speeding (50 km/h over limit): $495 → $744
- Stunting: $567 → $852
Updated Speeding Penalties:
- 30 km/h over the speed limit: up to $324
- 40 km/h over the speed limit: up to $560
- 50 km/h over the speed limit: up to $744
Drivers exceeding 50 km/h over the speed limit will face a mandatory court appearance, where fines will be determined by the courts.
Other Examples:
- Construction zone speeding: $540 (previously $499)
- Distracted driving: $390
- Driving without a licence: $351
- No active vehicle registration: $527
High-risk offences such as careless driving, excessive speed, stunting, and racing will see the largest increases.
