PUBLIC NOTICE: Beware of Asphalt Paving Scams
Residents are advised to exercise caution when approached by individuals or companies offering asphalt paving services. Fraudulent paving operations often target homeowners with high-pressure sales tactics and poor-quality work.
Warning Signs of a Potential Paving Scam
Be cautious if a contractor:
- Solicits work door-to-door and offers "today only" discounts.
- Claims to have leftover asphalt from another project.
- Requests large cash deposits or immediate payment.
- Refuses to provide a written contract, detailed quote, or receipt.
- Uses unmarked vehicles, rental trucks, or vehicles with out-of-province licence plates.
- Cannot provide verifiable business information, references, or proof of licensing.
- Uses temporary phone numbers, generic email addresses, or contact information that cannot be verified.
- Provides vague details about materials, project scope, or paving specifications.
- Increases the price after the work is completed or demands additional unexpected payments.
Protect Yourself
Before hiring a contractor:
- All contractors—including those from outside the community who offer door-to-door services—are required to obtain a Town of Vegreville Business Licence. If you have concerns about a service being offered at your door, please contact the Town to verify the contractor's licence. To verify a local business licence, contact the Town of Vegreville Infrastructure Planning and Development Department at ipd@vegreville.com or call 780-632-6479.
- Obtain multiple written quotes.
- Verify business credentials and references.
- Ensure all work details, costs, and payment terms are documented in a written contract.
- Avoid paying large deposits upfront and never feel pressured to make an immediate decision.
Reporting Suspicious Activity
If you suspect deceptive or illegal paving activity, document as much information as possible, including:
- Business name and contact information
- Names of representatives
- Vehicle descriptions and licence plate numbers
- Dates and locations of activity
- Copies or photos of contracts, invoices, flyers, and communications
If threats, intimidation, or criminal activity are occurring, contact local police immediately.
Residents are encouraged to keep all paperwork and take photos or videos of completed work, particularly if defects or concerns arise.
