Community Standards Reminder

The Town is reminding all property owners and occupants that maintaining their properties helps keep our community safe, clean, and welcoming. Municipal Enforcement will be conducting proactive patrols throughout the community to monitor compliance with the Community Standards Bylaw.

Property Maintenance

A property may be considered a nuisance if it shows a serious lack of maintenance or upkeep. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Excessive accumulation of building materials, appliances, household items, tires, vehicle parts, or other stored materials.
  • Loose litter, garbage, construction debris, or refuse.
  • Damaged, dismantled, or derelict vehicles or trailers.
  • More than two (2) unregistered vehicles stored outdoors on residentially zoned properties.
  • Untidy or odour-producing compost piles.
  • Grass exceeding 15 centimetres in height.
  • Excessive weeds.
  • Graffiti visible from neighbouring properties or public areas.
  • Excessive dust, dirt, smoke, or offensive odours.
  • Trees, shrubs, vegetation, or buildings that interfere with utilities, obstruct sidewalks, impair visibility for motorists, or are dead, diseased, or deteriorated.
  • Accessible excavations, ditches, drains, or standing water that may pose a public safety hazard.
  • Exterior building damage or deterioration, including peeling paint, untreated surfaces, missing siding, shingles, windows, doors, or other openings.
  • Damaged or deteriorated fences, including peeling paint, untreated surfaces, missing boards, or rotting posts.

Construction projects must be completed within five (5) years from the date a building permit was issued, or within five years of construction beginning if no permit was required. Projects that remain incomplete beyond this timeframe may be considered a nuisance under the Community Standards Bylaw.

Alleyway Maintenance

Residents are responsible for maintaining trees and grass located behind their properties along back alleys, including trimming any branches that overhang into the alleyway, keeping grass cut to a maximum of 15 centimetres, and removing excessive weeds and other debris. Trees and branches should not obstruct vehicle traffic, pedestrians, or utility lines to help ensure alleys remain safe and accessible.

Boulevard Maintenance

Property owners and occupants are responsible for maintaining the boulevard adjacent to their property by:

  • Keeping grass cut to a maximum height of 15 centimetres.
  • Removing excessive weeds, fallen leaves, and other debris.

Regular boulevard maintenance helps keep our neighbourhoods clean, safe, and attractive for everyone.
